A Season to Rest

Welcome, friend. As this busy season begins, let’s pause and accept God’s gentle invitation to rest. True peace isn’t found in slowing our schedules but in drawing near to Him — the One who restores our souls.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

How Are You?

We’re asked this question multiple times a day. Strangers who pass us by, people we speak with on the phone, friends and family — they all ask, “How are you?”

My usual answer is a simple, “I’m fine, thank you.” But recently, I caught myself responding differently. In just a short time, I had given three different answers:

 “I’m feeling kind of stressed.”
 “I’m pretty overwhelmed.”
 “I have far too many things on my plate.”

I know I’m not alone in this. Maybe you’ve been there, too. It was 10:30 p.m. on a recent Friday night when I finally called it a day, closed my computer, and headed for bed. I set my alarm for 5:30 the next morning — I had a full day planned with family, and several tasks on Friday’s to-do list still unfinished.

I scribbled those unfinished tasks onto my notepad to complete early the next day. But as I tried again and again to fall asleep, my list kept scrolling through my mind. When the alarm clock sounded a few hours later, I was surprised I had slept at all. Still, I jumped out of bed, determined to start my day strong.

As is my habit, before doing anything else, I opened the Word of God to spend time with the Lord. Rather than my usual reading, I felt led to open the You Version Bible app and reflect on the verse of the day. There, glowing on my phone screen, were the words

I needed most:
“There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.” — Hebrews 4:9

In that moment, I realized what had been happening in my mind, heart, and plans: I wasn’t observing the Sabbath.

There’s a reason God gives us both the command and the gift of the Sabbath. Psalm 23 speaks of the Good Shepherd who “makes His sheep lie down in green pastures.” The word “makes” here doesn’t mean He forces them — it means to cause. The Good Shepherd causes His sheep to lie down. Why? So they can rest. Rest is essential for the sheep so their bodies can recover from the stress of the day, leading to renewed strength and increased productivity.

In the same way, rest is essential for us.
Rest increases your clarity. When our minds are filled with lists of uncompleted or half-finished tasks, it’s difficult to think clearly about the present moment. When we give ourselves space to rest — a weekly reset —
our minds have the chance to clear and refocus.

Rest increases your peace.
Knowing that a day is set aside where the lists will wait and the expectations are paused allows us to rest more deeply and sleep more soundly.

Rest increases your capacity.
It’s amazing how removing one day of work from your schedule can actually increase your productivity on the other six. Just as sheep become more productive after resting, we, too, find greater capacity when we honor a rhythm of rest.

We are all entering one of the busiest seasons of the year. As November arrives, Thanksgiving will soon be here, followed quickly by Christmas with all the hustle and bustle it brings. So let me ask you again: How are you?

If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or like there’s just too much on your plate, today’s reminder is for you.

Take a moment to read Hebrews 4:9. Reflect on it. Put it into practice. And watch as God
brings clarity, peace, and capacity into your mind, heart, and schedule giving you what your soul needs most, rest.
